RADIANT Expands Safe-Series Instruments with Mini Glass Panels for Experimental Aircraft

Mini Glass SafePanels now offer integrated Turn Coordinator, Altimeter/VSI, AirSpeed Indicator, and AGL Vertical Tape with digital and analog representations

    — RADIANT Technology, maker of compact avionics for experimental and light aircraft, announced a major addition to its Safe-series product line: a new family of Mini Glass Panels. Full-instrumentation glass panels are fast becoming the standard for aircraft, but they are often too costly for experimental aircraft pilots.

RADIANT’s new line of Mini Glass Panels offers small size, advanced features, and new capabilities for experimental aircraft pilots, including a turn coordinator, altimeter/VSI, and airspeed vertical tape. An AGL (Above Ground Level) mode provides a dedicated AGL vertical tape for pattern work and low-altitude operations. Plus, it also has a backup battery that runs when ship power is dead and built-in 8-step dimming for adjustment to any lighting condition. The instrument is offered in both a 2 ¼” and 3 1/8” panel cutout. Pricing starts at $299.95.

“Pilots have been asking for a compact, modern backup that feels like a bigger glass,” said James Wiebe, president & CEO of RADIANT Technology. “SafePanel is our answer: a true ‘Mini Glass’ safety net that doesn’t fight your panel space or your budget.”

“With the new feature, you may have the lightest, simplest PFD (primary flight display) on the market.  Certainly, for an ultralight or anyone absurdly weight-conscious, you have given them an opportunity to save several pounds on their build.” Todd, Waterloo, IA, commented.

SafePanel builds on over a decade of RADIANT’s experience designing electronic turn coordinators for the experimental market, but with an all-new display and electronics platform aimed squarely at pilots who want modern glass-style situational awareness without the cost and complexity of a full EFIS.

“SafePanel is what I’d call true ‘mini glass’,” said James Wiebe, founder of RADIANT Technology. “It gives you a primary flight display (PFD) backup attitude for turn, yaw, altitude, VSI, airspeed, and AGL (altitude above ground level) when you need it most.”

True “Mini Glass” Experience: Rounded, Refined, and Readable

SafePanel’s display design was built to look and feel like a scaled-down glass panel,

    • Rounded corners and completely de-squared edges – every sharp LCD corner is cleaned up with custom pixel work for a refined, finished look.
    • A subtle, neon-like, glass-style presentation, reminiscent of modern big-brand avionics, but in a compact, budget-friendly package.
    • Eight levels of dimming, providing smooth, precise brightness control from bright daytime cockpits to dark-night IFR.

The result is a true “Mini Glass” experience: crisp, modern look with carefully tuned brightness for real-world cockpit environments.

Smarter Turn Coordinator, with Digital Yaw and Warnings

SafePanel’s turn and bank presentation offers more information:

    • A re-engineered inclinometer and ball with smoother geometry and motion than RADIANT’s earlier turn coordinators.
    • Digital yaw readout, giving a precise numeric indication of rate of yaw change.
    • Yaw exceedance warnings, with clear annunciation when yaw exceeds approximately 5° and again around 20°, helping pilots catch tightening turns quickly.

Integrated Altimeter, VSI, and AGL Vertical Tape – with Optional ASI Tape

    Standard on SafePanel

    • Digital altimeter
    • Digital VSI
    • Vertical VSI tape, giving at-a-glance trend information
    • When configured for AGL, the vertical tape becomes an altitude-above-ground indicator instead of airspeed. The tape and large digital readout give an immediate picture of height above terrain, which is ideal for pattern work, training, and low-altitude operations.
    • User-configurable thresholds make it easy to align the AGL tape with typical pattern altitudes and flap-usage practices.

    Optional ASI Tape

    • For airspeed, builders can add the ASI Dongle, which turns SafePanel into a full mini-glass backup:
    • Smooth ASI vertical tape plus a digital airspeed readout.
    • Functional from 0 to 220 knots (250 mph).
    • User-selectable knots/mph.
    • All V-speeds user-configurable in setup, displayed directly on the ASI tape (Vso, Vs1, Vfe, Vno, Vne).
    • With the ASI option, the vertical tape functions like a traditional “mini glass” airspeed indicator. The user can set it back to AGL mode via a setup screen.

Power, Panel Compatibility, Battery Backup, and Rest Of World Usage

Battery backup automatically charges when connected to ship’s power. Because it works when ship power is lost, SafePanel includes robust power and backup features:

    • In the event of ship power loss, SafePanel raises a clear power loss flag and continues operating on internal battery, with 4+ hours of typical runtime, 10 or more hours at reduced brightness.
    • SafePanel has front-panel power switch for quick control.

Panel-Mount Design for standard 2 1/4″ or 3⅛” instrument hole. 2 ¼” usage may require an extra notch cutout.

    SafePanel supports global operations:

    • Rest Of World fully supported, with user-selectable 29.92 inHg vs 1013.5 hPa standard settings.
    • User-selectable knots/mph for airspeed display.
